Great location! Lovely place. Great kitchen windows and backyard for enjoying the morning in Kanab. The only minor negatives were the bathroom locations (3 people for downstairs bathroom since upstairs bathroom was ensuite), there were only 4 spoons in the house, a few things were in disrepair, and when we asked for dishwasher soap, we were given two little pods for the whole week. Minor things, but would have been nice to have a better appointed kitchen.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Southwestern. Right in town. All the amenities we needed. Such a lovely place. The other people I stayed with kept telling me I did a good job booking this one. We go to Kanab every year to volunteer at Best Friends. I am sure we will be booking the place again.
Great location. Home included everything we needed. Really nice to have a washer and dryer. Beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were modern and clean and the kitchen included most staples although we did not cook. Outdoor area was nice but too hot in the evening to enjoy. Really liked relaxing on the front porch drinking coffee in the mornings. Only negative would be that the house could benefit from a deep cleaning.
Property served our needs well. A good location, good beds and a/c. House was clean and only one block from downtown and a coffee shop. Hallway shower was a little difficult to use. Hard to regulate the temperature. Washer and dryer were 'newer' but located in the basement with a steep staircase and minimal lighting. Could be dangerous, Otherwise, a good rental in a great location. Rich
Hi Rich, Thank you for your review and we are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We will soon be in the process of updating the shower so it's not so difficult to use but we appreciate all the feed back in regards to the shower and the location of the washer/dryer. With upcoming renovations we are taking all feedback to the owner to ensure we can address all suggestion made by our guest. We truly appreciate you choosing to stay with us and we hope to see you again!
Comfortable home centrally located near the center of Kanab. Easy walk to town. The sofa in the living room is tired, needs to be replaced. Suggest that you leave a supply of paper goods (paper towels and toilet paper) for future renters. No dishwashing detergent either. Small items but necessary details. Overall, satisfied with the rental.
Hi Leslie, Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to review The Southwest. All of your feedback is appreciated and will be passed on to the owner. We are looking to do some updates and refurbishments this winter so your suggestion are very helpful. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay not only at the cottage but in our quaint little town. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us and we hope to see you again!
We spent 4 nights in Kanab at the cottage. It was a good fit for our family. We had 7 of us and had plenty of room to spread out. Everyone loved the front porch in the afternoon for a gathering spot, and we had the fire pit and the back patio for evening grilling and chilling. The kitchen was roomy (though a bit dark) and well supplied. Plenty of seating for all inside and out. Laundry is available in the basement. The house is so central to the sights. We did a day at Zion (45 minutes), day at Bryce (1 1/2 hours), and Lake Powell/Lower Antelope Canyon (about 1 1/2 hours). The Grand Canyon is about an hour or more south, but it was closed when we were there. We were able to walk everywhere in town for breakfast or dinner, the food store is close by for supplies. We did have a few gripes. The shower, while newly renovated and modern, was either running out of hot water or the water was too hot and couldn't be turned down. Seemed a little out of place in an old house, but it was nice when it worked for the lucky ones who got the hot water. Upstairs ceiling is low, so tall people beware. Nice apartment type arrangement up there with private bath and living room separate from the rest of the house. We did blow the circuit breaker turning on a stand-up lamp at the top of the stairs. The back patio and yard were great, but we felt like it hadn't been tended in a while. We had to sweep up a lot of dirt and leaves before we hung out there, and there was a hole dug in the at the edge of the patio which hadn't been filled in yet. There seemed to be outdoor speakers and party lights, but we never did figure out how to get any of those working. Those were minor items overall as the overall experience was great - everyone had a wonderful time and loved hanging out at the house. Highly recommend it for a group or family vacation!

A lovely old home with modern conveniences. Impressive bathrooms. The loft is like a mini apartment with seating area, TV then the other end bedroom, separated by a bathroom. It was plenty spacious for our family of 6 but still maintained a cozy feel. Yard was inviting as was front porch. Would definitely go back if traveling in that area, especially since so convenient to town. Just lost one star bc the baseboards had holes which would make me worry if something was lurking though no evidence was seen and possibly just drywall behind it, though I didn't get down to look. Lovely home.
Hi Robin- Thank you so much for your review & feedback. We are so happy you enjoyed the house. We will check into the baseboards ASAP & remedy whatever is needed! Thank you once again for staying with us. Jeff
We really enjoyed our stay in Kanab the home was a perfect fit for our group to visit and done together. There are nice seperate areas for whatever your needs are. Would like to make a very very strong suggestion to replace some beds They are very tired of holding people up. My wife and I were in a king bed but it was like we were jammed into a baby crib. Bad news.
Hi Pete- Thank you so much for your review. We are so grateful you enjoyed the house. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and helps us provide our guests with the highest quality amenities possible. We are in the process of replacing all mattresses or pillow top covers that need replacing. Thank you once again for staying with us!
Sylvia
We stayed here while volunteering at Best Friends. We had an overnight visitor for two nights. The location is PERFECT! Right in the middle of town and only 5 miles from BF. It's peaceful and very comfy. The new shower is the best. The only problem we ran into was that the jets in the downstairs tub weren't clean so they shot out dirt. Not sure what happened there. That was the only issue we came across. I will definitely stay here again.
Over the past 3 years, our family has established a tradition of escaping the Northeast during Spring Break and heading to Utah to hike in astoundingly beautiful surroundings. Our stay at the Southwestern Cottage was definitely our best rental experience by far -- a lovely, spacious, comfortable house conveniently located in Kanab and accessible to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Escalante. We had the best time yet and look forward to coming again next year!
I stayed here with two friends and the two dogs we brought along with us. It was just perfect! The cottage is really quite spacious and charming. Not only does it have all the basics, but it's got extras like a beautiful patio, fire pit, grill, and the most amazing bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and a steam shower that plays music. Seriously, stepping into that bathroom is like stepping into a spa retreat. It seems the owners have thought of everything, even laying out a supply of magazines. You feel as though your dear friends just loaned you their house for a little getaway. The spacious layout and "extras" in the kitchen make the Southwestern perfect for entertaining if you're meeting a group or bringing one along with you. Plus, it's central to the main stretch of Kanab's restaurants and shops.
My sister and I stayed in the Southwest Cottage during the week we volunteered at Best Friends. We really appreciated that we could have dog 'sleepovers'. The location allowed us to walk all over downtown to shops and restaurants (Rocking V is excellent!) plus into the canyons to see the sandstone and feel the quiet. The kitchen and breakfast area is delightful with plenty of sunlight in the morning. We liked being able to cook our own breakfast and dinners. The living room was comfortable and we definitely used the wood stove (plenty of wood was pre-cut). The upstairs bedroom is lovely - a private suite in the house! I used one of the downstairs bedrooms and enjoyed it too. The property manager was always available to answer questions. I would recommend the Southwest Cottage to others. Minor suggestions: more silverware and plates, bowls, etc. and better instructions for using the wonderful downstairs shower and AC/heat system. Otherwise, perfect, quirky, and new - all at the same time.
We visited Kanab a few days ago so we could volunteer at Best Friends over the Christmas Holiday. I was amazed by this place. Every time I needed something, I found it. I needed a hair dryer and sure enough there was one in the bath. I needed a pan to bake some rolls and sure enough I found the perfect dish. I needed a sharp knife and it was there. One of my favorite places was the table located in the eat-in kitchen. There is a big picture window to view the world. My dogs loved sitting on the ledge and I was at the table with my coffee. It was really lovely. It is also really close to down town. We took several walk to window shop. It has a cabin feel that is quite comforting. The heater is wonderful. Even though the weather was really, really cold we were nice and toasty.
We stayed at the Southwestern for a week, and loved every minute of it. The bedroom upstairs is its own retreat. And the downstairs offers a cozy, relaxing home-away-from-home feel. Even the backyard offers a peaceful respite. The house is great for large parties or a romantic get-away. And if you want to have a sleep-over with a Best Friends pet, even that's a possibility. Loved it.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The house has a warm Southwest feel with plenty of room for a family or a group of friends, including dogs! We volunteered at Best Friends sanctuary which is just 10 minutes by car and then did day tours to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park (my favorite) and Bryce Canyon. It was so nice to come "home" to this charming cottage at the end of every day, light a fire in the back yard fire-pit or stroll two blocks to the shops and restaurants in Kanab. I loved the very cool, modern shower and privacy of the backyard. So much better than a hotel. Comfortable, homey and well appointed without being so precious that you can't relax, kick back and enjoy your vacation.
We stayed at this nice Craftsman style house for 10 days with our two dogs. It was a great "jumping off place" for our day trips to the North Rim, Zion, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Brian Head, Lee's Ferry/Vermillion Cliffs, and of course, Best Friends (we went there 3 times). The location is easy walking distance to the main part of town with shops and restaurants. We especially loved the Rocking V, which had fantastic vegetarian fare. The house had a great loft with a wonderful skylight that allowed for star-gazing from the comfortable king-sized bed. The modernized bathroom downstairs is very nice, and the steam shower is truly awesome. The house is a little dark, and could use a table lamp or two in the living room. Though there was adequate cooking equipment in the kitchen, some of it is in poor condition (example: there was a teflon fry pan with damaged finish, and the handle was about to come off). We were grateful for the fenced back yard for the dogs, but it could use some attention. There was trash in the back area and in the fire pit, and loose screws and staples on the ground by the fence that divided the yard which could injure dogs (I think we picked up most of them). After we had been there almost a week, we found damp laundry in the washer and dryer in the basement, obviously from the prior visit; we re-washed it all and left it folded. Overall, it was a great place to stay and the few small problems would be easily fixed. The house itself was clean, comfortable and convenient, and we were very happy to find a dog-friendly rental. We were a bit disappointed, however, that the local dog park is only available to local homeowners, and the local city park does not allow dogs at all, not even on leash! Seems like an unfriendly atmosphere for a place so close to Best Friends. Anyway, with these few caveats, we would recommend the house to friends and family.
We very much appreciate the feedback given and thank you very much for staying with us. We are always looking for ways to improve our properties and we want to deliver the very best experience for vacation homes in Kanab. You're right about some of our kitchenware needing improvement, so we've gone shopping for the best! We've just added a new cuisinart non-stick pan set, a JA Henckel's knife set, OXO spatulas and lots of new little extras we hope our guests will love (including large bath sheets for the shower). Wet laundry left in the washer and backyard debris is unacceptable and we will make sure our cleaning team has taken care of this before guests arrive in the future. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to see you again soon.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night stay in the Southwestern Cottage in Kanab. The bungalow style house is beautifully decorated with amenities that make it a welcome home away from home. The in-town location makes it easy to walk downtown in the evenings, yet the yard feels secluded with nice views of the nearby rock canyons. Kanab is a central location to explore the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Escalante and Grand Staircase areas and Zion National Park. The house itself has old-world craftsmanship, interesting architecture and a sense of cultural history that works in the modern era for making a comfortable stay. The property was clean and well-maintained; and the managers responsive to inquiries. The property was more in-town than we had expected, but was definitiely worth the stay. We would recommend it to friends for lodging.
Everything was wonderful, as usual. Have stayed at this exact cottage, before, with one friend, and this time we invitied another. We visit all the national parks, Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce. We also volunteer at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, which is only five miles away, and we get to spend time with all the sweet animals. It is a comfortable house with nice size backyard, patio, and fire pit. As well as four bedrooms, two baths, dining area, full kitchen and living room. There is a really nice town park about three blocks, away and many stores and restaurants, within walking distance.Beautiful red rock scenery. It is quiet and peaceful with all the comforts of home. It is fenced, and although we have not brought our own pets, the yard is fenced and there is a dog door.
The Southwestern is a beautifully appointed, luxurious, comfortable cottage! We stayed for a night in mid-August. It was a delight from the moment we walked in the door! Everything was clean and fresh, and the beds were amazingly comfortable. It has an awesome yard with a great patio on which to enjoy morning coffee or a leisurely dinner. We also fostered a sweet little puppy from Best Friends during our visit. He was a sweetheart, and definitely added to the joy of our stay. I highly recommend this cottage. You will not be disappointed.
We had a great time, the house was the perfect location for our day trips to Zion and Bryce, Lake Powell and local State parks, and we were happy to get home each evening to kick back. A day trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon seemed like a stretch so we spent a weekend down there, but it is definitely doable for a long day trip. Although we cooked at home a fair amount, it was great that the house was within walking distance of almost everything. The downstairs bathroom was to die for, the kitchen was well-stocked, and the stars at night from the back patio couldn't be beat. My husband and I hiked the Squaw Trail near the house one morning on one of our "stay at home" days (so my father-in-law could take a break) so having that so convenient to the house was fantastic. Lots of great photos from that hike! We also loved the kitschy Frontier Movie Town museum and gift shop. This was a really cute house, and fit our needs perfectly. We would definitely stay there again...
